©2002, IS&T—The Society for Imaging Science and Technology outer thin layer, epidermis, and an inner, relatively thick layer, dermis. For normal human skin, the absorption of the epidermis is dominated by a black pigment called melanin, though there are five different pigments in the skin.6 The spectral characteristics of different races or different individuals are due only to variation in the amount of melanin present.7,8 Buckley and Grum,9 and Kollias and Baqer8 indicated that the spectral reflectance of melanin monotonically increases across the visible range. The inner layer, dermis, is rich with blood vessels that contain hemoglobin. Hemoglobin has marked absorption bands around 575 nm, 540 nm and 410 nm.10,11 Brumsting and Sheard4,5 indicated that the marked absorption bands of hemoglobin occur only when it bonds with oxygen within living skin. Heavily pigmented skin will present a less pronounced effect of hemoglobin absorption because of the masking effect of the greater amount of melanin pigmentation. Human lips, on the other hand, are in rich of blood vessels and will present hemoglobin absorption bands. Optically, the epidermis is a strongly forward scattering layer and, for all wavelengths considered, scattering is much more important than absorption.12 Details of skin biology are beyond the scope of this research. The skin is not the only part of the human body that differs in color from one individual to another. The eyes have the same elements affecting their coloring. In dealing with an individual’s eye color one is referring to the pigmentation of the iris. The iris, from the standpoint of color, consists of the anterior layer together with its underlying stroma and the posterior pigmented epithelium.13 In the eye, as in the skin, melanin is the dominant pigment material. However, in this case, the location of the melanin is as important as the amount.6 Eye color also depends partly on optical phenomena. Introduction

Statistical Characterization of Spectral Reflectances in Spectral Imaging of Human Portraiture

Spectral reflectances of various parts of human faces from various ethnic races were collected from experiments on spectral imaging of human portraits. Principal components analysis (PCA) was applied to those spectral reflectances not only from different races, but also from different face parts. The first three principal components can explain about 99.8% of cumulative contribution of variance...

Detection and Characterization of Human Teeth Caries Using 2D Correlation Raman Spectroscopy

Background: Carious lesions are formed by a complex process of chemical interaction between dental enamel and its environment. They can cause cavities and pain, and are expensive to fix. It is hard to characterize in vivo as a result of environment factors and remineralization by ions in the oral cavity. Objectives: The development of a technique that gives early diagnosis which is non-invasi...

A Methodology to Assess the Accuracy with which Remote Data Characterize a Specific Surface, as a Function of Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM): Application to Three Italian Coastal Waters

This methodology assesses the accuracy with which remote data characterizes a surface, as a function of Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM). The purpose is to identify the best remote data that improves the characterization of a surface, evaluating the number of bands in the spectral range. The first step creates an accurate dataset of remote simulated data, using in situ hyperspectral reflectanc...

A Study the Rupture in Royal Portraiture of Qajar era based on Michel Foucault’s Theory of Power

Royal Portraiture is one of the last Iranian miniature styles which more or less can be considered a Synthesis Style of Iranian and European elements. This style was inspired by Westernization, but underwent important changes during the Qajar era. In this research, one tries to analyze and interpret one of its ruptures that occurred in the era of Mohammad Shah. The main issue of the present pro...

Application of orthogonal array technique and particle swarm optimization approach in surface roughness modification when face milling AISI1045 steel parts

Face milling is an important and common machining operation because of its versatility and capability to produce various surfaces. Face milling is a machining process of removing material by the relative motion between a work piece and rotating cutter with multiple cutting edges. It is an interrupted cutting operation in which the teeth of the milling cutter enter and exit the work piece during...
